Povzetek članka
Alexis de Tocqueville je bil dolgo časa hvaljen in idealiziran kot eden izmed pionirjev moderne demokratične in liberalne politične misli, vendar so mnoge nedavne študije, ki se osredotočajo na Tocquevilla in njegova dela o francoski kolonizaciji Alžirije, razkrile številna protislovja med njegovim zagovarjanjem demokratičnih idealov in njegovo podporo francoskemu kolonializmu, kar je spodbudilo ponovno ovrednotenje njegovih prispevkov k politični teoriji. Ta neskladnost postane še posebej očitna ob preučevanju preobrazbe v liberalnem mišljenju od poznega 18. do zgodnjega 19. stoletja. V tem obdobju so vodilni sodobni politični misleci, vključno z Johnom Stuartom Millom in samim Tocquevillom, začeli podpirati kolonialne doktrine evropskih imperialnih sil, kar je bilo v popolnem nasprotju s kritičnimi stališči njihovih predhodnikov.

Abstract (Izvleček članka v angleščini)
This article explores the conflicting perspectives of Alexis de Tocqueville in his writings about Algeria. The latter reveal his complex and often contradictory stance on democracy and colonialism. On one hand, Tocqueville is known for his advocacy of democratic principles and individual liberties, while on the other, his support for French colonialism casts a different light on his political thought. By examining his reports, essays, and letters on Algeria, the paper aims to contribute to the understanding of Tocqueville’s intellectual legacy while highlighting the tensions between his liberal ideals and his advocacy for the colonial policies of 19th-century European imperial powers.
