It is conceived as a meeting point between historical research and the public, so its programme rests not on conference papers but on round tables, discussions, film screenings and book presentations. Researchers present their findings in plain language and visitors are invited to join the debate.<\/p>\n<p>The festival is organised by the Centre for Public History, the Department of History at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana, the Slovenian History research programme group and the Retrospektive Association, each year in cooperation with one of the major cultural institutions. It has so far been hosted by the City Museum of Ljubljana, the Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia, Ljubljana Castle and the Historical Archives of Ljubljana. Every edition has its own theme. The first Retrofest, in October 2023, addressed borders, monuments and memory, the relationship between historiography and the public, and film as a historical source, marking among other things the centenary of the Rapallo border. In 2024, ahead of the eightieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War, it turned to the long-term consequences of the war, with guests including Sabrina P. Ramet and Marie-Janine Calic.
