Gorjanska kronika is a large citizen history project that combines scholarly research, the local community and contemporary ways of presenting the past. It consists of three connected parts, a book, an exhibition and a series of videos, which together tell the story of Gorje and its people. The project was funded by the Municipality of Gorje and carried out by the Retrospektive Association.<\/p>\n

Several dozen people took part, among them historians, geographers and other researchers, students, local researchers, writers and collectors. They examined archival material, literature, newspapers, photographs and other historical sources and carried out fieldwork and filming. Local residents opened family albums, contributed documents and photographs and shared their knowledge and memories, which makes the chronicle a joint result of scholarship and of the people who know the place and live in it.<\/p>\n

The book presents, in some hundred and fifty contributions, the natural environment, settlements and architecture, historical development, the economy, institutions and societies, everyday life, culture and sport, infrastructure and modernisation, and the people who shaped Gorje. It was published by the Municipality of Gorje in two thousand copies.<\/p>\n

The exhibition leads the visitor across thirteen panels from the natural environment and the earliest traces of human presence to present-day Gorje. It shows how climate, water, forests and mountains shaped people\u2019s lives, how villages emerged and the feudal order took form, how the inhabitants of Gorje turned from subjects into citizens, and how roads, the railway, electricity, industrialisation and tourism connected the area with the modern world.<\/p>\n

The great turning points hold a special place. Both world wars reached almost every family. After the first, Gorje passed from the Habsburg monarchy to the Yugoslav state, with the Rapallo border running only a few kilometres away. The Second World War brought German occupation, Germanisation, violence, forced conscription and a strong partisan movement. After 1945 electrification, running water, paved roads, new jobs, cars, television and housing construction thoroughly changed everyday life.<\/p>\n

The chronicle is not only political history. It deals with the school, the church, the reading society, the fire brigade, the brass band, cultural and sports societies and outstanding athletes. It follows the growth of tourism from Rikli and the discovery of the Vintgar gorge to present-day questions of management, mass visitation and the protection of the landscape, and traces the long road from manor and parish to modern local self-government, restored after the 2006 referendum on 1 January 2007.<\/p>\n

More than forty local residents and experts spoke on camera about nature, work, war, school, societies, sport, tourism and the changes they lived through. Published on Facebook and YouTube, the recordings bring personal stories and different views of the same place into the project.<\/p>\n

Gorjanska kronika is therefore more than a book about the past. It is an attempt to connect research, historical sources, the memory of people and contemporary ways of presenting history, on the understanding that the past can be interpreted in different ways while responsible history must rest on sources, facts and knowledge.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
