The Association for the Promotion of Cultural Heritage, Research and New Technologies \u2013 Retrospektive was founded in Ljubljana in November 2014. It brings together research, publishing and the public presentation of history, working along the lines of public history, which means presenting research in an accessible way without lowering scholarly standards. Its guiding principle is that the past can be understood and interpreted in different ways, while responsible history must rest on sources, facts and knowledge.<\/p>\n

The association\u2019s central publication is the peer-reviewed journal Retrospektive, published twice a year since 2018. It covers historiography and related disciplines such as archaeology, geography and ethnology, from the mid-eighteenth century to the present, and focuses on the contacts, connections and separations of peoples, ideas, movements and policies in Europe and beyond. The editorial board draws on Slovenian and foreign institutions, and one issue of each volume is normally devoted to students and early-career researchers. The journal is open access and indexed in DOAJ, ERIH PLUS and Ulrich\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Alongside the journal, the association publishes the book series Perspektive, which brings out scholarly monographs on modern history, from the history of mountaineering to prisoners of war, camps and local chronicles. Its widest audience comes through zgodovina.si, one of the main Slovenian websites devoted to history, with articles, book and film reviews and event announcements, and a Facebook page with more than ten thousand followers.<\/p>\n

Since 2023 the association has been a co-organiser of Retrofest, a festival of contemporary history in Ljubljana, prepared together with the Centre for Public History and the Department of History at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. It also co-organises \u017diveti gore, a festival devoted to mountain literature, research and heritage.<\/p>\n

A distinct part of its work consists of research projects carried out with local communities, the largest of them Gorjanska kronika, a history of the Municipality of Gorje presented in a book, an exhibition and video testimonies. The association also systematically documents memorial sites in Slovenia, from monuments to commemorative plaques, with the aim of publishing the
\nmaterial in a public online database.<\/p>\n

In October 2024 the association was granted the status of a non-governmental organisation in the public interest in the fields of culture and research. It operates on a non-profit basis and works with universities, research institutes, museums, archives, municipalities and societies in Slovenia and abroad.<\/p>\n
